Get Ready for Spring with by Cleaning your Closet

Spring is the time to reboot, refresh and tidy up! It’s recommended once a year to go through your closet and drawers and remove items you haven’t worn in one year, donate and replace with items that have quality and versatility for your particular lifestyle.

PURGE

The purging process is hard, as it takes some time and thoughtful consideration to decide if each item is a keeper or should be donated.  Start by asking yourself the following questions about each piece of your apparel, shoes and accessories:

• When was the last time I wore it? If you haven’t worn the item in one year, it’s unlikely you will again.
• Does it fit and is it comfortable? If it’s too baggy, too tight or just doesn’t compliment, you may reason that you want to keep it in case one day it will fit again.  But if the clothing does not make you feel good or is uncomfortable, it’s best to purge rather than just let it clutter your closet.
• Where or when would I wear it? If you can’t decide at which occasion it would be appropriate to wear it, with what other pieces it would go with, or how to accessorize, you may have bought something that doesn’t compliment your personal style … and it should be purged.

After you complete the purging process, you should have a good pile of apparel and accessories set aside to donate. Take them to your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, as well as Hope’s Wings, the Liberty House, the Nest, Dress for Success and others.

CLEAN

After your closet and drawers are less cluttered, remove the items, clean the space by dusting the shelves, rods, boxes, and vacuum or mop the floor.  Take a trip to your local hardware store or home store to find inspiring ideas to reorganize your closet with new hangers, boxes, bins, hooks, cube organizers, shoe racks, tie and belt racks, garment bags, and shelf dividers. Have a plan and get ideas online before you purchase organizational pieces.

You may want to add some glam to your closet with a new paint of coat, better lighting, a decorative but functional mirror, padded bench, and trendy, matching storage bins. Remember, taking the stress out of getting ready for the day, possible even adding a little fun and excitement, will not only increase your joy but start your day off right.

REPLACE

Buy for Confidence. While Marilyn may have been being facetious when she said this, we couldn’t agree more. Only buy items that make you feel powerful, strong, confident like you could conquer the world. Only splurge on pieces that ‘wow’ you and that you feel you can’t live without. Don’t waste money that don’t fit right, are uncomfortable, that you’re not sure where you’ll wear or just don’t compliment your body type.

Buy for Versatility. Find versatile pieces that you can dress up for work or for a night out on the town, or you can dress down for running errands with the kids or casual outings with friends or family.  You will save money and time if you don’t have to maintain a wardrobe for work and for play, but find ways to adapt outfits to fit the various roles and demands of your life. So buy pieces that you can wear to multiple occasions, multiple ways and multiple times.

Buy for Comfort. Shop for the season, for comfort and your personal style. Here in the Bluegrass, the weather can be … unpredictable with extreme cold and unbearable heat, sometimes in the very same week. So find pieces that you can layer and modify to keep you warm or cool you down during our moody Spring weather. Find fabrics that are comfortable to wear, soft to the skin, breathe well and are not too tight or baggy. Always try the outfits on at the store fitting room before you buy, examining the fit from every angle, whether standing up, sitting down or walking.
